How therapy works

Finding the right therapist

It is important to find a therapist who you feel you can work with and trust. I always suggest arranging an initial session before committing to our work together. This way you can get a feel for the way that I work, ask any questions and get a sense of how it would be working with me.

Which therapy?

It can sometimes be overwhelming trying to figure out the type of therapy that may support you at a particular time. You may have already experienced talking therapy and feel that the body needs some attention, or you may know that something more spiritual is important in the next part of your journey. Whichever direction you want to take it can be helpful to understand the different types of therapy available to you.

What to expect from a therapy session

All sessions last for 50 minutes and it is a space where together we can reflect on what you are experiencing at this moment in your life. Our work will include talking, connecting with sensations in the body (or working with the aim of re-connecting mind and body). We may explore movement and breath-work if it feels useful and I often offer space to use objects or pens, chalk or pastels to give a different type of space to what’s going on for you. I wouldn't give advice or tell you what to do, but I would facilitate you developing more of your inner qualities and resources and finding a more long term solution.

How long does therapy last?

Therapy often isn't a quick fix unfortunately, I work with clients on a medium to long term basis as I believe it’s important to build a relationship that can offer a place of safety. To enable exploration of painful sensations, experiences or memories it is important to create this type of space. You will usually know when you are ready to finish but it is something we will talk about together. It can be helpful to reflect on our work together before we come to an end so I always recommend bringing this to me before ending.

Commitment & collaboration

I work in a way where we use emotions, memories and bodily sensations as information to guide our work so it’s important to ask yourself whether you are willing to bear all and go to places that may feel scary or painful. It can often be a slow and gentle process to create the right space for healing but we work together, side by side to create the right environment for this to happen. Therapy is collaborative and rather than me giving advice or directing we explore and are curious together.

What will therapy do for me?

Every therapeutic journey is different; there is no right or wrong way of doing it. The aim of therapy is for you to give space to yourself, to become more aware of your own needs, values, and boundaries, with the aim of creating a sense of a more authentic self. I can offer a different perspective to notice any patterns or ways of being that can sometimes be hard to see.
